The Shining by Stephen King {review-giveaway}

The Shining
By Stephen King
Series: The Shining #1
Publisher: Knopf Doubleday
Publication date: first publication 1977
Genre: Horror
Purchase: Barnes and Noble/Amazon/Book Depository

First published in 1977, The Shining quickly became a benchmark in the literary career of Stephen King. This tale of a troubled man hired to care for a remote mountain resort over the winter, his loyal wife, and their uniquely gifted son slowly but steadily unfolds as secrets from the Overlook Hotel's past are revealed, and the hotel itself attempts to claim the very souls of the Torrance family. Adapted into a cinematic masterpiece of horror by legendary director Stanley Kubrick - featuring an unforgettable performance by a demonic Jack Nicholson - The Shining stands as a cultural icon of modern horror, a searing study of a family torn apart, and a nightmarish glimpse into the dark recesses of human weakness and dementia.
The first time I read The Shining was back in junior high and it terrified me. I didn't even have the image of Jack Nicholson’s evil smile yet implanted in my head. The king of horror never ceases to amaze me, even the second time around. This time rereading it in my *coughs * forties *coughs* I got to fully appreciate King's talent at fleshing out his characters. Filled with subtle horror, madness and a hotel that manifests and takes on a life of its own, this tale gave me all the creepy goodness only King can deliver.

While I cannot imagine you aren't aware of the tale or at least watched the movie, the tale centers around recovering alcohol Jack Torrance and his struggling young family. After a breakdown that cost him his teaching career, they have been struggling to make ends meet. With a car about to choke out its last dying breath, he accepts a job as the winter caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. * cue ominous music* Wendy his wife is very fragile and has seriously contemplated leaving good old Jack. Sadly she loves the loon and with a young clairvoyant son they travel with him to take up residence at the Overlook. Danny, oh poor Danny! He sees thing but is too young to articulate and shout, “we all gonna die if we go to that there hotel!!” Needless to say that as they head to the hotel * cue ominous music* with thoughts of bonding, writing and love the tale that unfolds is anything but a fairy-tale.

King has a unique ability to create dark, flawed and believable characters that stay with you long after having read the book. My husband and I are both huge King fans and still quote lines from our favorite Stephen King novels. "They all float down here", "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" "Get Busy Living or Get busy dying." Jack Torrance is one twisted, broken, angry, demented, alcoholic recovering wanna- be. He is also charismatic, a sickly sweet talker and manipulator. While his intentions are good, somebody forgot to flip the switch on. Add in the Overlook hotel *dantdantdant*  and you have the ingredients for sheer terror. Danny loves his Mom and Dad, and gets upset when he hears bad thoughts in his parent’s heads; like “divorce” and “suicide”. He really doesn't understand the things he sees. That is until the creepy Dick Halloran tells him that he has his “shine on”. Danny’s gift is known as the Shining. (Hence the title) The hotel takes on a life of its own as it feeds on and grows stronger from evil committed on the premises. *shivers* Haunted houses have nothing on the  Overlook. It is worse than the Hotel California.

Stephen King slowly draws you into the tale and its characters. You become completely lost in the corners of his warped mind. The lines between his world and reality blur. He slowly builds the suspense of the tale, carefully weaving in the gooey creepiness he is so well known for. Finally you reach a point where your hands are sweating, your heart is racing and there is not a chance in Haiti that you are setting this book down. His portrayal of Jack’s madness was genius and so well fleshed out. Add in the hotel's growing interest in Danny and *squee* you are in the middle of a book high that will not quit! The supernatural elements only enhanced the tale as the story picked up speed. It had me racing to it conclusion. While I love many of Stephen King’s work, this tale will forever be one of my favorites. He is and always will be on my auto-buy list. If you love horror, then my guess is his book(s) already graces your bookshelf.

One of the reasons I chose to reread The Shining was because of the announcement that Stephen wrote a second book to this tale called Doctor Sleep. Scheduled to be released in 2013, it will tell the tale of a grown-up Danny Torrance and his quest to save a special twelve year old girl from a murderous tribe of paranormals. *I know right, I shivered too* The True Knot tribe lives off the “steam” that children with the "Shining" produce but only if you torture them to death!!  I plan to devour it as soon as it’s available.

I gave this novel 4.5 coffee cups out of 5

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones {review-giveaway}

I am so excited to be bringing you a 'release day" review of Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet as part of Darynda Jones Street Team. Since it's happening during my "Things that Go Bump in the Night" month long event, Jones has added some special goodies as a giveaway to my followers. Enjoy!

4th Official BlogTourBadge3

Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet
by Darynda Jones
Series: Charley Davidson #4
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Publication date: October 30, 2012
Genre: Adult Paranormal
Purchase: Barnes and Noble/Amazon/Book Depository

In Darynda Jones's Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet, sometimes being the grim reaper really is that. Grim. And since Charley’s last case went so awry, she has taken a couple months off to wallow in the wonders of self-pity. But when a woman shows up on her doorstep convinced someone is trying to kill her, Charley has to force herself to rise above. Or at least get dressed. She quickly realizes something is amiss when everyone the woman knows swears she’s insane. The more they refute the woman’s story, the more Charley believes it. In the meantime, the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, has been cleared of all charges. He is out of prison and out of Charley’s life, as per her wishes and several perfectly timed death threats. But his absence has put a serious crimp in her sex life. While there are other things to consider, like the fact that the city of Albuquerque has been taken hostage by an arsonist, Charley is having a difficult time staying away. Especially when it looks like Reyes may be involved. Just when life was returning to normal, Charley is thrust back into the world of crime, punishment, and the devil in blue jeans.
I was tickled pink to receive an advanced copy of Fourth Grave Beneath my Feet. As soon as I receive a new book in the series, I lock myself away and consume it. My family is often startled at my sudden outburst of laughter, giggles and rants about Reyes and Charley. When I finish, I walk around in a state of depression, thinking about how long I have to wait till the next book is released. *sigh* That is until someone flashes a shiny book cover in front of me (I get easily distracted).

Two months have passed since Charley was attacked and arrested. She is home in her apartment basically wallowing in her own self-pity. Of course she is doing it Charley style! I felt sorry for her and giggled at the same time. An intervention and a new case force Charley out of her pajamas and back into action in her role as a private investigator and Grim Reaper. Reyes is back and hotter than ever. Some very bad creatures want Charley. The tale that unfolds is full of twists, humor, swoon-worthy moments and plenty of action.

I loved hooking up with my favorite characters again and was deliriously happy to be back inside Charley’s crappy ghost infested apartment. Charley is more messed up than ever and happy to be a couch potato. Despite her over the top issues (which she refuses to deal with) she still manages to get out there and kick some butt. We see growth in her knowledge and skills and foreshadowing of things to come. Eep! Cookie is her usual self, and Charlie's sister is woven into the tale more. Cookie’s daughter was absolutely hysterical in this novel.  Reyes *swoon* We see a lot of him, and I loved every smexy, red hot minute of it. He and Charley actually have conversations. I know! Right? I still want to bash both their heads in and tell them to stop their wicked tango and admit their feelings already!! (Rant over) We do finally get some satisfaction regarding the romance and I will tell you it was worth the wait. Villains’ and other secondary characters (some old, some new) add to the tale and further advance the plot. Charley’s family is crazy and her Dad will blow your freakin' mind. Garrett who nearly died in book three reveals some interesting information and so do the sisters..and that’ all I am sayin’.

The world-building and the overall theme progress in this novel, while I still have tons of questions Jones reveals a wealth of information regarding Charley, Reyes and things to come. The cases were interested and full of clever twists. They are more in the background as we get some real Charley and Reyes time. It amazes me how Jones juggles and weaves all of the different threads of this tale and ties them together at the end. We really get to see the vulnerable side of Charley in this tale, and while we have always known her snarky comments and one-line zingers are a defense mechanism; we see it even more clearly. She is such a strong, stubborn character and only one person is strong enough to break through her walls. Jones tackled the tough subject of PTSD in this novel and I thought she did an excellent job. While the ending tied up nicely, in her typical Jones fashion she revealed a startling piece of information at the very end that has me squealing in anticipation for Fifth Grave Past the Light.

If you love snarky characters, humor, mystery and smexy son’s of Satan you really need to read this series.  Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet delivered and I cannot wait to continue this series. I abso-freaking-lutely love this author and she is on my auto-buy list.

Laurie London ~Sweetblood/Iron Portal author {guest post-giveaway}

Today I am excited to have a guest post from Laurie London author of the paranormal romance series Sweetblood. She is going to share her new novella Assassin's Touch (Iron Portal series) and talk about things that go bump in the night. Enjoy and then be sure and enter to win a paperback copy of Seduced by Blood and an eBook copy of Assassin's Touch

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year, which is probably why I write about vampires and things that go bump in the night. I’ve always been fascinated by what lies unseen just beneath the surface.

Those Thirteen Steps to Hell purported to be hidden in an old neighborhood cemetery. A secret tunnel joining two popular lakes, so when a person drowns in one, their body shows up in the other. A secret, whispered in a dream, that turns out to be true. A shadowy figure, warning you to take another road home, the same road where a fatal crash occurs just minutes later.

Yes, I’m fascinated by stories like these. That if only you knew where to look, you’d see a whole new world—either externally in our communities, or contained within ourselves.

Another world, separated by hidden portals is the focus of the Iron Portal series. For generations, horrible secrets have been kept from the public in order to perpetuate a long-running feud between the realms. Some believe that monsters slip through the portals to eat children from the other side. Others say these portals are just a figment of a world obsessed by the supernatural.

In ASSASSIN’S TOUCH, the first book in the Iron Portal series, an assassin captures a valuable member of the army. Soon, secrets between the worlds are exposed and everything begins to unravel. Unable to deny the intense chemistry between them that makes no sense in either of their worlds, Rickert and Neyla fall in love.

A world of vampires veiled within our own society is the premise of the Sweetblood books. These killers walk among us, are our neighbors, our co-workers, our friends, but the average person has no idea that vampires exist…although a sweetblood human may have some inkling that their life is always in danger.

In SEDUCED BY BLOOD, the fourth book in the Sweetblood series, when a traitor threatens to expose their secrets, Santiago, the leader of a group of vampire enforcers, must work with the one woman he can’t read—the beautiful, mysterious Roxanne.

What are some of your favorite paranormal stories that involve secrets and hidden worlds? Do you have any real life ghost stories you want to share? ~Laurie

I love London's Sweetblood series and cannot wait to read Iron Portal. Take a moment to check them out.

Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction edited by Carrie Ryan {review-giveaway}

Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction
edited by Carrie Ryan
Publisher: Random House
Publication date: August 28, 2012
Genre: Paranormal/collection
Purchase*: Barnes and Noble/Amazon/Book Depository

Richelle Mead, Lisa McMann, Michael Grant, Meg Cabot, Laini Taylor, and nine more of the hottest YA authors to hit the shelves explore the concepts of prophecy and prediction in this story collection edited by NYT bestselling author of The Forest of Hands and Teeth, Carrie Ryan.
Have you ever been tempted to look into the future? To challenge predictions? To question fate? It's human nature to wonder about life's twists and turns. But is the future already written—or do you have the power to alter it?
From fantastical prophecies to predictions of how the future will transpire, Foretold is a collection of stories about our universal fascination with life's unknowns and of what is yet to come as interpreted by 14 of young adult fiction's brightest stars.
The collection Foretold: 14 Tales of Prophecy and Prediction offers tales by some of today’s most popular young adult authors. From witches to aliens these short stories are sure to have something for everyone. I love collections like this because it offers me the chance to explore new authors. I found it to be the perfect bedside book and each night I read a different tale.

The stories all deal with prophecy and prediction. There are witches, an oracle, gypsies and tales of judgment day. With the Mayan end of the world date approaching these tales are sure to make you shiver. Some offered lessons and most will make you think.

Gentlemen Send Phantoms by Lani Taylor takes us to a village on all Faith’s Day. The Chosen One by Sandra Mitchell is the story of two princesses; one is destine to be queen. Burned Bright by Diana Peterfreud deals with the consequences of judgment day. Homecoming by Richelle Mead has Dimitri and his family. Misery by Heather Brewer takes us to a town called Misery which closely resembles purgatory. The Angriest Man by Lisa McMann deals with a young teenage boy who growls when he speaks. Out of the Blue by Meg Cabot is a series of interviews about two fraternal twins and events that occurred on their sixth birthday. One True Love by Malinda Lo is about a princess prophesied to bring down the king and what he does. This is a Mortal Wound by Michael Grant is set in the future and deals with a boy being expelled. The Mind is a Powerful Thing by Matt de la Pena shares the power a prophecy can hold. Improbable Futures by Kami Garcia has gypsies and psychic readings. Death for the Deathless by Margaret Stohl deals with immortality. Fate by Simone Elkeles is a love story. The Killing Garden by Carrie Ryan tells the story of the emperor’s stranglers and a young woman.

Overall I enjoyed these tales. As with any collection some I really liked and others were meh. Noteworthy reads for me were Gentlemen Send Phantoms, the Killing Gardens, Misery, Burned Bright and Out of the Blue. Homecoming was interesting, but I kind of felt like something was missing, largely because I have not read this series. I found some new authors and would really like to see the Gentlemen Sends Phantoms developed into a full story *hint*

I want to thank Random House for sending a finished copy in exchange for my unbiased review.

I gave this collection 3 coffee cups out of 5.

Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry {review-giveaway}

Rot & Ruin
by Jonathan Maberry
Series: Benny Imura #1
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Publication date: December 15, 2010
Genre: YA Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian
Purchase*: Barnes and Noble/Amazon/Book Depository

In the zombie-infested, post-apocalyptic America where Benny Imura lives, every teenager must find a job by the time they turn fifteen or get their rations cut in half. Benny doesn’t want to apprentice as a zombie hunter with his boring older brother Tom, but he has no choice. He expects a tedious job whacking zoms for cash—but what he gets is a vocation that will teach him what it means to be human.
I grabbed the Tales of  Rot & Ruin Collection after reading some awesome reviews from Christy@ Love of Books and after a little arm twisting from her. I am pleased to tell you that we are still friends. In his first book Rot & Ruin, Maberry led me on an epic tale in a post-apocalyptic America, filled with zombies and loveable characters. It left me anxious to read the next book in this series.

The tale takes place about fifteen years after “First Night” (the night most of world turned into zombies). We meet Benny Imura who lost both of his parents that night and lives with his brother Tom, a zombie hunter. Benny is about to turn fifteen and must find a job or his rations will be cut in half. His brother has offered to take him into the family business, but Benny has some unresolved issues regarding his brother. After attempting a series of jobs he finds himself as an apprentice to his brother!  The tale that unfolds takes Benny on a journey of self discovery. The tale was action packed, at times hilarious and I found myself completely spellbound.

I loved the characters Maberry has created. Benny is inquisitive, stubborn and brave. The growth of Benny was delightful to watch. He finds himself and gains an understanding of human nature and zombies. Tom his older brother is a zombie hunter and in a word- HOT. He is like a ninja, calm, even tempered and a lethal weapon. I loved how he allowed Benny to figure things out while carefully parenting. He showed Benny how to be a man, and so often people tell instead of showing and I found this refreshing. Benny’s friends Chong, Morgie and Nix were cute, funny and added to the tale. Nix has a crush on Benny and he feels the same, but cannot reciprocate because of “guy code”. Lilah was fascinating, brave and totally kick-ass. Of course there were some totally badass villains for me to loathe and plenty of zombies out looking for a late night snack.

The world-building was unique and the tale was refreshingly original. While we learned a lot about “First Night”, the town Benny lives in and the Ruins, we didn't  really learn how the zombies came to be. Maberry did give us a close look at the town, its operations and details about zombies themselves. His take on them was fascinating. I also liked the different outposts in the Ruins and learning how people adapted. The whole thing made me question myself and what I would do. The tale is very character driven and at its heart it’s a coming of age tale. There is some romance and it was cute and sweet. I am looking forward to seeing how it develops. The tale flows well and I was captivated, but if you are looking for non-stop action, you may be disappointed. I will tell you that the action scenes were epic and had me turning the pages at lightning speed. The tale had some closure and it sets us up nicely for the next book.

I highly recommend Rot & Ruin to fans of post-apocalyptic dystopians and character driven novels. Zombies lovers will gain a whole new perspective on their fleshy friends. The next book Dust & Decay begins six months after Rot & Ruin ended and I hope to bring you that review in November.

I gave this novel 4.5 coffee cups out of 5
