History:

Elena was Nathaniel and Aria’s only child. Her mother died when she was very young and she never stopped blaming herself. She always wondered if Nathaniel blamed her but he never showed it so over the years it went from a painful question to simply a suspicion in the back of her mind that rarely rose its ugly head. She loved birds and the Stryx more than anything and wanted to one day take her father’s place as head of the Azure family because in her heart, she loved each and every Stryx, even those like Caleb who she finds very difficult to understand.

Inspiration:

Elena was the embodiment of the idealized image I had of mothers for a long time when I was very young.  Then she grew to be a person who could stand on her own as I learned more about the woman Iris never truly got to know and how amazing she was, yet how completely wrong she could be at times.

Worst quality:

She had an unfailing faith in all humans and Stryx alike and the good within them. Which is many times the worst quality a person can have and follow so adamantly.

Unique fact:

Elena was obsessed as a teenager with learning to understand each and every breed of aves. She spent her time obsessing over fairytales and Stryx text books or historical novels. Her favorite novel was The Sparrow and the Fairy Wren but she also secretly kept a guide to all Aves with her at all times and tried to learn what their bird counterparts were and how they affected them as people and their personalities or talents.

Excerpt:  
“Very well. I will tell you the way your mother once told us,” he said, sitting down on the beach.

Hear him and remember...

Told us? Iris sat and closed her eyes, ready to listen and let the story play out in her mind.

“You did that back then, too,” he chuckled.

Opening one of her eyes just wide enough to see him smile before lying down on her back, Iris soon realized that her large jacket worked as a shelter against the wind.

Falcon’s deep, soothing voice took over her thoughts. “Iris was a girl known for having an odd curiosity. She lived among people who felt that she should follow her heart, and her heart had a way of leading her to a river—the river Styx that lay just outside her village. She would follow it and stare into the tempting depths of the waters as though daring herself to swim. But she could not.

“Iris was a part of the Stryx, better known as the Eyrie, and all Eyrie were unable to pass through water. If they did they would lose consciousness in the water’s depths. They could touch it, or even put their feet in it, but once their head was underwater they would never again see the light of day. Iris only once tried to cross the river, but as soon as she had been submerged past her waist the pain had been too intense for her to bear and she had run from the river and sought refuge along its bank.” Falcon watched Iris for a moment before continuing. But as he watched her face, he thought he heard something in the distance.

“Do you hear that?” he asked.
